Film Review - Lekar Hum Deewana Dil

Heart Breaker

Film: Lekar Hum Deewana Dil
Cast: Armaan Jain, Deeksha Seth
Directed by: Arif Ali
Duration:  2 hrs 15 mins
Rating: * *

Directed by debutante Arif Ali (Imtiaz Ali’s brother) Lekar Hum Deewana Dil is a throw back on the films of the 80’s where the hero and heroine elope to get married. While the story on the whole may not have a great deal which is commendable, the scenes are written and executed with some zing. The first half passes off smoothly, the latter struggles like an overloaded truck going up a considerably steep climb.

Dinesh aka Dino (Armaan Jain, Raj Kapoor’s grandson) and Karishma (Deeksha Seth) are classmates and ‘good friends’.  She comes from a South Indian family and they want to get her married off, possibly before the next sunrise. Rather unconvincingly, the good friends decide to elope even though they are not truly, madly or deeply in love. The journey starts with Goa, moves to Nagpur, Raipur and the Naxal infested Dantewada.  “What is this Maowadi ?” he asks when he encounters the Naxalites. You can’t be too sure these days it could well be a real life episode involving Gen X.

As money runs out and under trying circumstances, they quickly discover that life is not a bed of roses.  They are itchy to annul their marriage once they get back to town and the rest of the film delves on the impending divorce.

The climax with a band bajaa baraat and a wedding is so passé now and only shows lack of imagination since it takes the easiest route.

If you look for logic or detail then this is a flop show all the way but since it moves at a fairly brisk pace till the half way point, the flaws get obscured.  His family background and a subplot involving his brother doesn’t help one bit.

Armaan Jain is okayish , nothing sensational nor is there room for complaint. Deeksha Seth on the other hand exudes conviction and confidence,  she is certainly one of the better talents we have seen in recent times.

With a taut screenplay (and perhaps a title devoid of Dil) this film could have done better but as the comment that I overheard after the film said “Yeh Humshakals, Holiday aur  Ek Villain se to achchi thi” That may not be saying much but I agree with that.
