Film Review - Dragon Blade

Such a Drag

Film: Dragon Blade
Cast: Jackie Chan, John Cusack, Adrien Brody
Directed by: Daniel Lee
Duration: 2 hrs 8 mins
Rating:  * *

Who would have thought that a film starring Adrien Brody, John Cusack, Jackie Chan would at times become an ordeal to sit through? Reportedly made at $ 60 million, a lot of it is spent on the sets, costumes and army fight scenes. It appears, not much has been spent on writing a decent script though.

Although the film claims it is based on true events, it doesn’t look particularly credible. This period drama is set during ancient time when the Silk Road was most sought after. Jackie Chan plays the chief of the Silk Road Protection Squad and his clan is caught in the war brewing in Rome between Tiberius (Brody) and Lucius (John Cusack). It doesn’t take long before you lose interest in the proceedings and the sub-plots make it even duller. You don’t know and you don’t care as to who is siding with whom and why they are all fighting with each other.

The writing and direction both are uninspired and while some of Chan’s action is fun to watch, there is a lot of clunky dialogue as well that could put you to sleep. John Cusack and Adrien Brody are both miscast although the latter tries hard to appear wicked.

Dragon Blade is a disappointment for Jackie Chan fans; you are better off watching a re-run of his older films.
