I don’t know
what they were smoking when the decided to make this movie - even by the
standard of Adam Sandler movies, Pixels is a huge disappointment. This is a mind numbing film with an
extraordinarily silly plot. Aliens misinterpreting our video games and
attacking us in the same form - it perhaps could have been pulled off but the
shoddy writing ensures that it stays more or less at the bottom. They even
manage to make Pacman, one of the handful computer games I played with zeal,
boring.
Sam Brenner
(Adam Sandler) is a nerd who used to be quite a gamer once upon a time but now
he does electronic installations. Violet (Michelle Monaghan) plays a divorcee
and sparks fly instantly when they meet. "For the
record, I'm an amazing kisser. All us nerds are, because we appreciate it
more" he proclaims giving hope to many.
The President of America (Kevin James) who happens to be his
good friend summon him when there is an alien attack, they end up with a
Transformers like destruction by pixelating everything. That gives an opportunity to the gamer and
convicts (Peter Dinklage) to come to the fore to save the day.
Antique games like Donkey Kong and Pacman are unleashed and
whatever little nostalgia element is there, it is taken away by the
pretentiousness. There are lot of
special effects and explosions but that doesn’t help much.
In the end, the earth is saved but your precious time is
lost.
